About St. Martinville
St. Martinville is the third oldest town in Louisiana. It features many historic buildings and homes with beautiful architecture, including the magnificent La Maison Duchamp. In fact, the St. Martinville Historic District was placed on the National Register of
Historic Places in 1983. The town is also the site of the Evangeline Oak made famous in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem.
History of St. Martinville
The area that would become St. Martinville, Louisiana was first inhabited by Native Americans including the Attakapas tribe. In the 1750s, the French rulers of Louisiana made land available to settlers in what was then known as the Attakapas District – and Acadians and Creoles began to settle in the area. In 1817, the settlement was incorporated and named St. Martinville (after the St. Martin de Tours Church – which is still a prominent local landmark).
